How do I prepare my lawn for sod?

Everything you need to know about preparing your site for premium Kentucky Bluegrass sod installation.

  1. 1Grade and cultivate your sod area to a depth of two to four inches sloped away from the house for water drainage
  2. 2If the ground has foreign grass in it, such as quack grass, it must be sprayed with Round-Up® two weeks prior to sodding
  3. 3MSF recommends applying a starter fertilizer before you install the turf. Suggested fertilizers, 12-12-12 or anything that says "turf or grass seed starter" works well and can be purchased at most home improvement or garden stores
  4. 4The sod must be installed within 24 hours of delivery. On days where the temperature is 82° and or windy, MSF recommends you unroll the sod from 2 pallets, start watering the newly laid area with a garden hose and sprinkler. Continually water as you progress
  5. 5The newly installed sod requires heavy watering for the first two weeks and regularly for the first year. (MSF recommends installing an in-ground sprinkler system for larger yards)
